Cold St. Petersburg Concert reviews
The George Clinton Mothership has Sailed
The most disappointing concert I have attended in the last 2 years is this one. Let's start with the positives.... The weather was lovely. Free parking was nice. The attendees were nice. I opted to bring in food from the casino, causing me to miss part of Kurtis Blow's performance. Beautiful!!! Despite that, I was fortunate to enjoy the smooth tunes of Frankie Beverly and Maze. That is, until the unfortunate incident with the keyboardist during their final song "Before I Let Go". It seems like the group may have exceeded their time limit.
Next up, the headliner Cold and the band took the stage and completely changed the atmosphere for me. Surely, they didn't cut short everyone's favorite Maze song for this!!! I have never encountered such a poorly sounding group of professional musicians. The horn section sounded off-key, and the background singers only seemed to join in during awkward moments. I've witnessed middle school bands that sounded and looked better. Cold promised a trip back to 1977, and I would agree with that if he meant the drug-induced performances of the era. It appeared to me that the group lacked practice together or individually. As many people left during the performance, I overheard someone expressing pity for those who hadn't seen the band in the 70's and 80's, as this current performance was disappointing and nothing like the good old days. While I missed those earlier performances, based on the stories I've heard about the legendary George Clinton and Parliament, this show was not up to par.
